▪ Birmingham was founded in 1871 and it blossomed in the beginning of the 1900's, becoming the most powerful industrial center in South Alabama, focusing on steel production. ▪ Birmingham Southern College(BSC) was founded on May 30, 1918 by the union of the Southern University from Greensboro, AL (founded in 1856) and Birmingham College that was opened in 1898. The university campus is located three miles from the downtown area and it measures 192 acres. Among the degree programs offered there are: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts in Public and Private Management and Bachelor of Science. The N.E. Miles Library, housed at Charles Andrew Rush Learning Center, provides the students with various learning resources, including a collection of over 250 000 volumes, more than 50 000 government documents as well as video and audiovisual records.
