Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, which is the county seat of Durham County, also extending in Wake County, with a population estimated at a number of more than 223 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 5th largest city in the state of North Carolina, by population.
Duke University was founded in 1838, by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day town of Trinity, being moved to its present location in Durham, in 1892. In 1924, tobacco industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment, and expressed its wish of changing the institution’s name in honor of his deceased father, Washington Duke.

The U.S. News & World Report also ranked the university’s undergraduate program 10th, among national universities, while, the medical, law and business schools has been placed among the top 14 in USA.
The athletic teams from Duke University are known as the Duke Blue Devils, who compete in 26 varsity sports, in NCAA’s Division I Atlantic Coast Conference, being perhaps best known for their achievements in golf, basketball, soccer and tennis, in which they won a total of 11 NCAA team national championships, of which 5 are in golf (’99, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007), 4 are in basketball (’91, ’92, 2001 and 2010), one in soccer, in ’86 and one in tennis, in 2009.
