Also known as UW and U-Dub, University of Washington, founded in 1861 is a world-class academic medical center which has three campuses in Tacoma, Bothell and the largest one in Seattle. In fact, University of Washington is among the oldest universities on the West Coast and the largest university in the northwestern part of the United States. In 2009, UW was ranked as the 16th best university in the world and it is also a Public Ivy institution.
In November 1861 when the UW was officially opened, it was named the Territorial University of Washington. There were some rough times in the years following the opening of the university, as the school had to be closed 3 times because of funds shortage and lack of students. The peak years of University of Washington were between the 60s and the 70s, which are known as the "golden age" of the school, a period when the number of students enrolled was doubled. Still, the same period was also one of high activism among students, who focused mainly on protesting against the Vietnam War.
UW’s athletic teams are the Huskies, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I-A and participate in the Pacific – 10 Conference. Their colors are purple and gold and their costume mascot is Harry the Husky, while the live mascot is Dubs, an Alaskan malamute. It is believed that in 1981 the concept known as “The Wave” appeared first on the Husky Stadium, one of the many facilities provided by University of Washington to its athletic teams. Others are the Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, the Husky ballpark, the Nordstrom Tennis Center and the Dempsey Indoor.
Seattle, or “The Emerald City”, is the largest city in Washington and the most major city in northern America. The city provides access to everything, from plenty of outdoor activities and excellent public transit, to an amazing downtown scene, filled by an incredible diversity.
Seattle is home to a huge number of festivals and fairs and the most famous are the Memorial Day weekend, Northwest Folklife, the Bumbershoot or Seattle International Film Festival. These events attract more than 100,000 people every year, expanding the cultural diversity of the city and increasing its continuous growth in economy and tourism.
Seattle’s major landmark and symbol is the Space Needle, a tower built in 1962 for the World’s Fair. It is an amazing engineering piece housing an observation deck at 520 feet and a rotating restaurant called the SkyCity at 500 feet. The impressive view on the surrounding area, including the islands and mountains, can be seen by tourists from the top of the Space Needle by using the elevators travelling at 10 mph, in 43 seconds. In 1999, the Space Needle was declared a historic landmark and it is indeed a must-see attraction in Seattle.
