WHAT TO DO AND SEE IN TUSKEGEE

Tuskegee is a city located in Macon County, Alabama State, famous for its Tuskegee University and an important landmark in the African American history.

 

The city's history begins in 1833 when General Thomas Simpson Woodward established Tuskegee, which he probably named after an Indian tribe, the Taskigis.

 

The city's first newspaper was published in 1865 and since then it has become an important educational center in Alabama, and later on, in the entire United States.

 

Tuskegee is the biggest community established in a rural county and it comprises a total area of 15.7 square miles.

 

If you visit the city of Tuskegee, its main attractions are listed below, but make sure you don't miss others such as the Tuskegee Human & Civil Rights Multicultural Center, Butler Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Tuskegee National Forest, The Tuskegee Repertory Theatre/Jessie Clinton Arts Center and Tuskegee City Lake.

 

Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site & Moton Field - located at 1616 Chappie James Ave., the place features exhibits and five historic films exploring the history of the Airmen of Tuskegee, providing also various activities for its visitors such as scavenger hunts and coloring activities for children.

 

George Washington Carver Museum - located in Tuskegee Institute on 1212 Montgomery Road and open to public daily with free admission, the museum contains exhibits of agriculture, chemurgy and chemistry, with films about George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington.

 

Booker T. Washington Home - the house is near the Tuskegee University and it was constructed using bricks made by students in 1899. The admission in the house is free and if you choose to visit it you will find out more about the Washington family and Booker T. Washington's interest.
