The athletic teams from University of Maine Orono, known as the Black Bears, bring excitement every time their games take place. Since 1987, the National Girls and Women in Sports Day has been celebrated every February, to honor the university's past and present achievements in sports and to accentuate the continuing struggle of women for equality in sports.

 

The first women's basketball team has been established in 1920, followed by the women's hockey team, started in 1923. Today, there are 10 women's athletic teams at UMaine, covering sports areas such as soccer, softball, basketball and ice-hockey, as well as 5 female head coaches.
