Getting around in Providence, RI

Bus 

 

Providence is served by RIPTA, which provides travel services across all of Rhode Island and throughout Providence, as well as by the Bonanza Bus Lines, Greyhound Bus Lines and Fung Wah Bus.

 

Train 

 

The rail service, in the area of Providence, is provided by MBTA, which runs a commuter rail between Boston and Providence on the Providence/Stoughton line (the regular fare is $7.75 for a one-way trip, which takes about an hour), and by Amtrak's Acela and Regional, with routes that continue to the south and west to Washington and Virginia. The Acela train takes just under 3 hours to arrive at New York's Penn Station on the way to points further south.

Providence's downtown area can be easily covered by foot. Despite that fact, besides driving, riding the bus is considered being the best way to get around in the city, due to the fact that the fares are convenient for most people and the RIPTA buses usually arrive on time.

From Logan International Airport: Head north and turn left toward Hotel Dr. Continue straight, and turn left at Hotel Dr. Turn right at Harborside Dr., and again at Jeffries St. Take the ramp onto I-90 W, and then take exit 24 for I-93. Continue toward I-93 S and merge onto I-93 S. Take exit 1 to merge onto I-95 S, toward Providence, RI, and enter Rhode Island. Take exit 27 for US-1, toward RI-15/N Providence/Pawtucket and continue straight onto US-1 S/Cedar St. Turn left at George St. and make a slight right at US-1 S/Pawtucket Ave. Continue to follow US-1 S and turn right at Smith St. Then, turn right at Elmhurst Ave.
