Sports & outdoor events

The Annual Midnight Madness, which happens in July, is perhaps one of the most popular and favorite sporting events in Ames, IA.

 

The event features a 5k walk/run and a 10k race, including a Captain's Kid Run, so the little ones can also participate in the event, starting on 5th Street, near City Hall, taking runners through the city streets of Ames, finishing east of Main & Clark. After the race, organizers have provided a post-race party, filled with live music, beer, picnic meals and lots of fun, which goes on until late in the night.

 

The Midnight Madness began in 1971 or '72, as a marathon from Ames to Boone, IA, but has been later moved to downtown Ames, and has been held here, every year, since then, with most of the participants registering in the 5k walk/run.

 

Festivals

There are numerous fun and entertaining celebrations, happening throughout the year, all over Iowa, but there are only a few taking place in Ames, IA, which are: The Rose Festival, scheduled in June, the Garden Art Fair, happening in July, the Harvest Moon Walk, celebrated in August and the Spirit in the Gardens, which takes place in October.
