The 26.2-mile Annual Atlanta Marathon is perhaps the premier annual sporting event in Atlanta.

 

The run happens in late November, on Thanksgiving Day, in downtown Atlanta, since 1981. The first marathon was held in 1963, at the North Fulton Golf Course, fact which makes it the oldest one in the Southeast.

 

In 1964, the Atlanta Track Club was formed, and since then, the run was held annually.

 

The course has remain almost entirely the same, since it was first held, since 1997, approximately 90% being along the same course used for the '96 Summer Olympics, finishing near Turner Field, the event being sponsored by The Weather Channel, since 2008.
