The University of Arkansas Fayetteville was founded in 1871, as Arkansas Industrial University. The campus was purchased in 1899. The university opened its doors and classes first began in February 1872. The citizens of Washington County had to raise $130,000 for the founding of the university. It was nicknamed `The Hill`, when it was opened, because of its location, overlooking the Ozark Mountains. There are 11 branches of the university, spread across Arkansas. The Fayetteville campus contains the School of Human Environmental Sciences, College of Education & Health Professions, School for Continuing Education and many other degree-granting academic divisions.
The campus includes a total of 130 buildings, spread on 345 acres. There are over 16 000 students from all over the state and around 900 international students, from over 100 countries that are attending classes at the university.

Arkansas Air Museum. The museum is a popular tourist attraction in Fayetteville. Visitors can make an idea about the history of flying, by admiring displays of racing planes, dating from the 1920's.
