Spelman College is a four-year liberal arts women's college located in Atlanta, US Georgia state's capital and most populous city, housing more than 540 000 people, within its limits (2009). Atlanta is also the seat of government for the state of Georgia and the county seat of Fulton County.
Spelman College was established in April, 1881, under the name of Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, and it was the first historically black female institution of higher education to receive its collegiate charter in 1924. It is also America's oldest historically black college for women and first among Historically Black Colleges and/or Universities, according to the 2009 U.S. News and World Report.
