Niagara University is a Roman Catholic university located in Lewiston, which is a village in Niagara County, in the US state of New York, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 2800 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. It is situated on the Niagara River, and it is half way between the world-famous Niagara Falls and historic Fort Niagara in Youngstown, NY.
Niagara University was founded in 1856, by the Congregation of the Mission, being originally called Our Lady of Angels Seminary, the university status being granted in 1883, when the university adopted its current name. It is still run by the Vincentian Fathers, all of its 25 presidents, including its current president, Father Joseph L. Levesque, C.M. having been Vincentian priests.
The institution has approximately 3 200 undergraduate students, in 50 academic programs, about one half of them being residents, the other half commuting from the surrounding areas. Although the college is known as a liberal arts school, it also offers programs in technical and pre-professional disciplines.
The university’s Athletic Department sponsors 18 Division I sports, the teams being known as the Purple Eagles, who compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in all sports except ice hockey, in which both the women’s and men’s teams competed in College Hockey America, the men’s hockey team moving to Atlantic Hockey in 2010. Niagara has experienced victory in many of its sports, including in men’s basketball, in which it won the MAAC Championship in 2005 and in 2007, earning automatic bids to the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, also called the "Big Dance".
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: James Boldt - CEO of Computer Task Group Inc., Rev. Lt. Thomas J. Conway - US Navy chaplain and World War II hero, Joe McCarthy - member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Hon. Robert P. O’Neill - Judge, Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, Kenan Simmon - Vice President, The Leading Hotels of the World, Ltd., and Robert Wegman - founder, Wegmans Super Markets, among others.
