Eastern Kentucky University was founded in 1874, under the name of Central University, being established as a teacher's college in 1906, by the Kentucky General Assembly, changing the university's name in Kentucky State Normal School. After having its name changed several times over the years, the university officially became known as Eastern Kentucky University, in 1966.

Richmond City was founded in 1798, by Colonel John Miller, who served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. According to the local story, the colonel was attracted by the friendly Indian tribes and the uncommonly good spring water.
