Duquesne University, officially called Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit, is a private Catholic university in Pittsburgh, which is the county seat of Allegheny County, in the US state of Pennsylvania, with a population estimated at a number of more than 300 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city in the state, the largest city along the Ohio River and, also, the largest city located in Appalachia.
Duquesne was founded in 1878, first starting as the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost, back then, only having an enrollment of just 40 students and a faculty of 6. In 1911, it became a university, being the first Catholic institution of higher learning in Pennsylvania to achieve such a distinction, today, being the only Spiritan institution of higher education in the world.
Since it first opened its doors to students, Duquesne has expanded to over 10,000 graduate and undergraduate students, offering today degree programs at the baccalaureate, professional, masters and doctoral levels in 189 academic programs, through 10 academic divisions, which include: the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts , the Duquesne School of Law, Mary Pappert School of Music, and A.J. Palumbo School of Business Administration.
Duquesne University's athletic teams are known as the Duquesne Dukes, who compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level and in the Atlantic 10 Conference, in various men's and women's sports, including in baseball, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball and rowing. The Dukes are, perhaps, best known for their achievements in men's basketball, in which they had great success over the years, among their most notable achievements being the fact that they played twice in national championship games in the 1950s and they won the National Invitation Tournament championship in 1955.
Duquesne has nearly 80 000 alumni, living worldwide, among the most resonant names on the list being: Tom Atkins - Actor, notably in Lethal Weapon, The Rockford Files, Harry O, and Oz, Alan N. Braverman - Senior Executive Vice President, Secretary, and General Counsel of The Walt Disney Company, from 2003 - present, Jon A. Boscia - CEO of Lincoln National Corporation, William Schultz - President and CEO of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, and Keith Donohue - Novelist and current Director of Communications for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, among many others.
