Chicago State University, commonly known as CSU, is a state university of Illinois, located in Chicago, which is the 3rd largest city in USA, by population, and due to the fact that it has a population estimated at a number of 2.8 million people, it was also named the largest city in the state of Illinois, as well as in the Midwestern USA. The city was founded in 1833, near the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, forcing the Potawatomi people, who were then the inhabitants of the area where Chicago stands today, to move.
CSU traces its roots back in 1867, when the Cook County Normal School was founded, mainly, thanks to the strong initiative of John F. Eberhart, who was the Commissioner of schools for Cook County. After being renamed and relocated several times over the years, since it was founded, CSU finally got it current name, in 1971, one year after moving to its new location, at 9501 S. King Drive, between Burnside and Roseland.
The athletic teams from CSU are known as the Cougars, who participate in the Great West Conference of the NCAAs Division I, in various sports, being best known for their achievements in basketball and wrestling. In 1984, the basketball team has won the 3rd place in the NAIA National Championships, while The Cougar Wrestling Team has won a total of 20 titles, in 76, 77, 78, 79 and 80.
The list of notable CSU alumni contains names such as Edward Gardner - founder, Soft Sheen Products, Juba Kalamka - black LGBT activist, emcee, curator and record producer, Steven Whitehurst - award winning author, Zelda Martin Whittler - first African American Female Undersheriff of Cook County (featured in Jet magazine), as well as several other great personalities.
